Jiayuwen Qi

Jiayuwen Qi is part of an elite group of students who has been awarded Ohio State University Graduate School's most prestigious award, the Presidential Fellowship. The College of Engineering announced the seven Buckeye engineers, who represent disciplines in computer science and engineering; biomedical engineering; civil, environmental and geodetic engineering; and materials science and engineering.

Qi has always been fascinated by our material world. The intrigue triggered her to study materials science and engineering at Xiamen University in China. "The process of understanding, exploring and developing materials is thrilling, and we know materials change the world," explains Qi. Understanding the connection of an atom to the macroscopic world unveiled the potential of a materials science engineer.

Jiayuwen Qi came to The Ohio State University in 2019 to begin the materials science and engineering graduate program. Under the direction of Professor Wolfgang Windl, she focuses on the forwarding modeling of atom probe tomography (APT), a material characterization technique that can resolve identities and positions of atoms in three dimensions.

They recently established a TAPSim-MD method by taking the atomistic simulation of APT to the next level. This development allows for the study of fundamental physics of APT, understanding artifacts and quantifying uncertainties in APT data.

Curiosity led Jiayuwen Qi to the materials science and engineering field. Her persistence yielded a novel process benefitting the materials research community and earning her the title of Presidential Fellow.

Being awarded the Presidential Fellowship is absolutely inspiring. I am very grateful for all the support I received from my advisor, collaborator and lab mates. The recognition makes me feel more confident about myself, my current research and my future in academia.

Jiayuwen Qi plans on working as a postdoc fellow after graduation.
