Eric Van der Giessen is Professor in the Department of Applied Physics at University of Groningen and is a member of the Material Science Center, one of the five leading research schools in the Netherlands. His general research theme is scale transitions to explain and quantify structure-properties relations for a wide range of materials, including metals, polymers, ceramics, and cellular materials. Discrete dislocation plasticity has been a major effort for almost ten years, during which a methodology to solve boundary value problems has been developed. Eric Van der Giessen became the youngest member of the Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2000.
